A Pocketful of Random

For my friend Andrea, who just learned to do a welt pocket.

Can you find the single welt pocket?

There it is!

The pattern matches at the bottom pocket on the left side only due to the pocket crossing a fitting dart. You have to pick one side or the other.  I wish I had more pictures of how I did this neat trick. It comes down to hunting through the scraps for a piece that matches the motif where the pocket is slashed open, cutting an overly large rectangle and fiddling the welt fold and seam allowances till you get the match. Hand baste, check the match, adjust if necessary. Math and obsessing for the win!

This was a man's vest for a mid-Victorian frock-coated ensemble from Heritage Day 2010 (I think).

  1. Are you KIDDING me?! That's so awesome! And with such a complicated paisley too...my proverbial hat's off to you! I wonder if I can incorporate welt pockets into my Late Bustle dress I have planned just to try this...

An aside, I really love that fabric. I've developed a fondness for paisley lately, and it's bluish teal, one of my favorite colors.

  2. Thank you! You called the welt pocket tedious and this adds a little more tedium, but it's not really hard, just fiddly. Tim needs a new frock coat and vest and he's asked for a wild Chinese brocade riverboat gambler style vest so I'll be sure to get better pictures when I do it again.

I just love those fabrics too. I try to get a new one for the stash whenever they go 50% off.
